The first owner of the land this cemetery lies on was Samuel Daugherty, who purchased it from the U.S. government on Oct. 18, 1820. He sold it to Charles Daugherty Nov. 19, 1832. On Mar. 22, 1852, Charles and Elizabeth Daugherty sold one acre for $50 to the "Inhabitants of Wayne Township, for a burring ground." This was "to be layed off,...including the Grave Yard, commencing at a certain Beech tree standing on the bank of the creek about two rods south of said Grave yard..." The cemetery had already been in use for a number of years prior to 1852, by the Daughertys as well as their neighbors. The creek on the east side, mentioned in the original description, has long since changed course, and part of the remaining embankment is now covered with fill. Needless to say, the "certain Beech tree" is long-gone as well.
The cemetery is still in active use and well-maintained by the Daugherty Cemetery Association. Several additions, shown on the play layout, have enlarged the boundaries:
James Daugherty Addition (1894)
Annetta Daugherty Addition (1928)
Quinton G. Noblitt Addition (1947)
Joseph Conner Addition (about 1981)
Conner South Addition (about 1995)
