Located one mile east of Huntley on a blacktop country road, West Verona cemetery was founded in 1871. Although the last burials were in 1917, abandonment of the plot began before the turn of the century with the organization of Verona Union cemetery association and establishment of a burying ground a few miles to the south.

Neglect, weather beaten fences and roaming cattle had taken toll of the resting place. Many years ago, a tornado had wrecked the home of W.R. Benton, where the records were kept.

Approached on the matter, the Verona township board levied funds and appointed James Foss and S.D. Lane, prominent sons of Verona pioneers, to carry out the project. They worked most of the summer, searching old records, old deeds, interviewing persons who might have information.

Now on a knoll overlooking Center Creek on the Byron Larson farm, along a heavily traveled road, stands the new memorial shaft, monument to pioneer founders of the community.

Many persons had not known the cemetery was there. Some graves had been exhumed and moved to Union or other cemeteries. No doubt many are unmarked. Names on the plaque are only those of known record. (text by J. Gardner)
