The Scandia Lutheran Church (Norwegian Lutheran) was organized in 1899 and a frame church was erected in the SE1/4 of the SE1/4 of Section 19, Flowing Township, Clay County, Minnesota. The congregation was part of a 3-point parish with nearby Concordia Lutheran Church in Moland Township, and North Buffalo Lutheran Church in Kragnes Township.

The cemetery appears to have been platted around the time the church was organized, though there are at least three graves which are substantially older than 1900, but may have been moved to Scandia later on. At some point, the cemetery was officially named "Scandia Lutheran Cemetery" and a marquee has been erected bearing that name.

The cemetery was at one time surveyed by Walter I. Larson, a registered surveyor from Moorhead, Minnesota. The cemetery contains 13 blocks, and each block contains about 8 to 10 lots. Each lot contains several graves and the number of graves varies from lot to lot.

As Flowing Township contains an abundance of flowing wells, the Scandia Church basement was prone to flooding, and without electricity in the area to power a pump for keeping the basement dry, the congregation moved the church building into the nearby town of Averill in 1948. Electricity came through the area around a year later.

In 2002, the Scandia Church decided to erect a half-scale replica of the church building on the original site of the church near the cemetery. Funding from this project largely by a bequest from the estate of Raymond and Cora Johnson and the chapel was dedicated on May 25, 2003. A cemetery map and records can be found inside the chapel.

The Scandia Church owned and operated the cemetery until the spring of 2022, when a cemetery association was organized as the church would be closing on July 17, 2022.
