The original “Sacred Heart Old Cemetery,” just east of the Flensburg Catholic Church, proved unsuitable because of a high water table and hardpan soil, which made digging difficult. Consequently, a two-acre plot was purchased during 1916 for the new Sacred Heart Cemetery, located on a hilltop about 0.8 mile due south of Flensburg.
The cemetery is located at 45 deg 56.86 min North latitude and 94 deg 31.82 min West longitude at an elevation of 1233 feet MSL.
The first burials at the new cemetery took place during June 1917 when four Jaskoviak siblings, ages 3 to 17 years, died over an eight-day period due to severe diphtheria. Both Sacred Heart cemeteries continued to be used for some years, with increasing usage of the new cemetery. Only three burials took place in the original cemetery after the mid-1940s.
