The San Fernando Pioneer Memorial Cemetery is the second oldest cemetery in the San Fernando Valley, and contains the unverified remains of more than 600 local citizens whose graves are largely unmarked due to long-term neglect and vandalism.
For decades the property was unfenced, vandals would drive their vehicles through the property tearing up the small amount of family plot landscaping. Vandals would destroy, steal the grave headstones. The property had a HUGE unpaid water bill due to vandalized & broken water pipes. Due to the property being abandoned (the last internment being sometime in 1939), the cemetery could not pay the thousands of dollar city water bill to the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power.
The property has caught the attention of the local historical society. The cemetery is currently undergoing an archaeo-geophysical survey to determine where lost graves are located so the historical society can proceed with further preservation.
