The KAHBAKONG CEMETERY was designated as a Taylors Falls Heritage Preservation Site in April 2007.

The chosen name, Kahbakong (pronounced cab ah kong), is a variation of the Ojibwe term for "falls" (or rapids) such as those found in the nearby St. Croix River which separates Minnesota and Wisconsin.

In December 1854 the Kahbakong Cemetery Association was formed by the pioneer residents of Taylors Falls, Chisago County, Minnesota Territory.

The new association members included:

George E DeAtly
W.H.C. Folsom
Patrick Fox
Thomas Lacy
Lucious B. Smith
Joshua L. Taylor
William Ward
Richard Arnold (burial location unknown)
Henry Bush (burial location unknown)

Five trustees were elected and the annual election meeting date was agreed to be held on the second Tuesday of September each year at 7 o'clock p.m.

During their first meeting it was voted to purchase 15 acres of land at 10 dollars per acre and have it surveyed into blocks, lots, avenues, and alleys. Blocks would be created in three different sizes and sold for $20, $10, or $5. A block would contain either 16, 8, or 4 lots. (A lot is equivalent to a single grave in today's terminology.) The cemetery was officially established and open in July 1855.

Cemetery blocks were sold for the discretionary use of each family. In the beginning, the specific burials within each block were not recorded by the Association. Later there was a concentrated effort to collect and record the names of all those interred. Announcements were placed in the local newspapers and descendants of families known to have purchased a lot in the cemetery were contacted.

The accuracy of these retrieved records is dubious and this should be kept in mind when reviewing the early interments. There remains 56 unknown memorial listings where graves are known to be occupied but no information has been discovered to identify those individuals. If you have knowledge of a burial but a memorial has not been listed, please contact the cemetery project manager at the Chisago County Historical Society.

In the twentieth century the Association resurveyed the cemetery and reclaimed the unused land previously designated as alleys. The original block and lot numbering system was retained and the new lots were designated as a new Section. The result of this action is the two sections are interlaced instead of being separate areas of the cemetery. Section "A" was created from the previously designated alleys, while the letter "B" has been assigned to the original blocks to maintain alphabetic consistency.

A cemetery index system was created by Ethel C Anderson, a former association secretary, and this record keeping method was used for many years. A card was created for each interment and it included the decedents name, date of birth, death, and burial, the officiating funeral home, the block and lot number, and family information if known. In the spring of 2009 this index card information was transcribed into Excel files by the dedicated effort of Diane Dedon, the current association secretary.

The memorials created on Find-A-Grave are part of a project of the Chisago County Historical Society to bring all county cemetery records online. For each cemetery a variety of sources are used to create the most accurate listing of interments. This includes official church records, sexton records, previous transcriptions, and cross reference to county and state birth, marriage, and death records. In addition, each cemetery is being photographed and the images are added to the memorials as time permits.

In the spring of 2012 the Taylors Falls Historical Society provided the opportunity to photograph a pocket book, a personal diary of burials that was kept by the grave digger. The first entry is 19-Jul-1908 of an infant named Andrew F Holmquist. The last entry was 24-Feb-1923 of Everett W Peterson, a baby who survived only two days. Approximately 200 entries were recorded and are being cross-checked and if missing, are added to the memorials in this cemetery.

Like any human project, mistakes are made. Corrections and additional information is gladly accepted and posted to any of these memorials.

Please use the Edit tab and Suggest A Correction link located in the upper right corner on each memorial page.

You are encouraged to upload individual and family photographs to help fulfill the goal of creating meaningful memorials for each person listed on Find-A-Grave.
