On a piece of unbroken prairie belonging to George Bickford, section 24 of Elm Creek Township became the Elm Creek Cemetery in 1866. The land was located just east of the young settler's home when it first became a burial place for Bickford's young wife and infant child, the Bickford's first baby. After this tragedy, George decided to give an acre of his land to used as a public burial ground. He helped organize the plans for the cemetery's management and its upkeep.

After some time, the Elm Creek Cemetery Association was formed and became certified on July 21, 1873. Mr. Bickford called a meeting at his home to have the men's association receive and gather funds to be used only for the cemetery and make a decision to hold their annual meeting on the last Saturday in May at 3:00 P.M. Three trustees were chosen as mangers of affairs; one was to be elected each year and only serve for a three year term. The purpose of the association was to maintain the cemetery.

On September 17, 1873, a meeting was held at the country school house, District 55, for the purpose of forming a Cemetery Society to look after and care for the appearance of the cemetery. The cemetery has been very well kept throughout the years and is noted for its neatness and beauty. There are several war veterans buried in this cemetery.
