The half acre for Cedar Lake Cemetery was deeded December 12, 1911 by Mary Jane Fitzsimmons to Cedar Lake Cemetery Assn. Among the weeds is a small broken marker with this inscription: "Thomas A., son of J.H. & P.I. Stockdale, Died Mar. 23, 1871, aged 2 years, 5 months & 20 days. R.N. 18.
Many of the first settlers in this neighborhood were men who answered the call to preserve the Union or defend the frontier, while welfare for dependents was something unheard of.
Two veterans of General Sully's Indian Fighting Army in the Dakotas are buried in Cedar Lake Cemetery. Corporal Samuel H. Clark, Third Battery, Minnesota Light Artillery, enlisted March 31, 1864 and served until Feb. 27, 1866. His son-in-law Sgt. Charles E. Fitzsimmons, Company C. Second Minnesota Calvary enlisted Nov. 16, 1865.
