Cambria Cemetery was established in 1870 with a land donation which was made by early resident of the area, George Leffingwell. This land was later deeded over to the San Simeon Masonic Lodge in the year 1877. In 1940, the San Luis Obispo County set up official boundaries and then created special districts for the 11 cemeteries in the county, including Cambria Cemetery.

Cambria Cemetery is 12.2 acres in size and it stands in the middle of the largest stand of Monterey Pines in the state of California. In addition, it is a short drive from the Pacific Ocean.

In the cemetery are 120 wooden headstones, 80 of which have worn and weathered beyond identification. Consequently there are 86 unidentified burials in the cemetery, 6 of which are child burials. Early records for these burials no longer exist. The earliest born, known internment is 1798. The earliest marked grave is dated 1870.
