Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery was purchased by the City of Hoquiam in 1933. After the purchase of the cemetery Mayor Truman and staff walked the cemetery grounds and review burial records; they found that the cemetery was in poor condition. Shortly after the purchase of the cemetery Mayor Truman announced that Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery would no longer be a potterÂ’s field; that everyone buried at Sunset Memorial would be treated with respect and receive the same care regardless of their financial standings. With the help of the Department of Corrections work relief crews they created a new section, built roads, planted shrubs and planted over 500 trees which had been donated by Polson Logging. They also worked at repairing the old portion of the cemetery which had fallen into disrepair and build a new entrance into the cemetery off of what is now known as Sunset Drive. A year later on Memorial Day of 1934, Civil War Veteran Amos Berry raised the dedication flag on the new Sunset Memorial Park. Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery is now one of the most beautiful well kept cemeteries in the Pacific Northwest.
