Search Tarters Chapel Cemetery:

The Tarters Chapel Cemetery was established around 1850 although burials were taking place there before that time, Tha land was given by Shelby Tarter for a church and the cemetery. The origional Tarters Chapel Church was located across the road from the cemetery and was used for church services up until 1968, when a new church was built about a mile away where the former Maple Grove School house was located. The old church burned sometime in 1969, and services are still held at the new church to this day. All interments in this cemetery are early settlers of the Milltown, Keltner, Portland, Pickett, and more areas of Adair county Kentucky. Most attended the church and utilized it as their family cemetery, and most still do to this day. The upper end of the cemetery is a empty grass area but it is estimated that there are at least 50 to 75 unmarked graves that were marked only by creek rock, and in the early 1950's it had become overgrown and a community effort to clean it up ended up in the removal of the creek stones. Some of the known surnames that are unmarked are but not limited to : Beard, Burris, Burress, Blankenship, Keltner, Smith, Dudley, Stephens, Pickett, Reliford, Rutherford, Parson, Kemp, Baker, Tarter, Pyle, Pile, Franklin, Parnell, Rodgers, Rogers,Stephens,Retherford ,Rutherford and others.
