This Catholic cemetery, known in later years as St. Mary’s Cemetery, was located between Livingston and Townsend Avenues and bordered on the east by Lamborn. On September 25, 1872, the land was sold by A. M. Wilkinson to Eliza Farrel; on March 31, 1880, the land was deeded by Eliza Farrel and Brown Farrel to Lawrence Palladino, S.J., Pastor of Sacred Hearts, with the following statement on the deed, “and being the same now enclosed and occupied as a Catholic Cemetery.” On December 10, 1883, Lawrence Palladino deeded the cemetery to Bishop John Baptist Brondell; on March 22, 1899, the cemetery was deeded from Bishop Brondell to “Roman Catholic Bishop of Helena.” As noted by the deed of March 1880, burials occurred on this property well before it was deeded to Lawrence Palladino, S.J. The first “recorded” burial was in November 1872 and the last “recorded” burial in 1922. St. Mary’s Cemetery fell into disrepair and in 1972 and the property was deeded to the City of Helena as a passive park. The cemetery is now known as “Robinson Park.” Some bodies were removed to other cemeteries but many graves remain in the park; the tombstones, monuments and grave fences were removed and disposed of in several areas around the county.
