In 1942 the U.S. Army purchased 15,000 acres of land in Madison County, Kentucky. To build the Blue Grass Army Depot on this land, over 150 family properties were purchased. As part of the purchase agreement, the graves of family members on those properties were exhumed and relocated to properties purchased for that purpose. Two cemeteries were established, one for "whites" (Cemetery A/Blue Grass Memorial Cemetery) on US-421 and one for "colored" graves (Cemetery B) on Speedwell Road. There were a total of 901 bodies in Cemetery A. The names of 672 of those re-located are unknown because their original graves were either unmarked or marked only with pieces of field stone. Trustees were appointed for each cemetery and the Army gave a sum of money for upkeep. In 1973 the Army notified the community that it would no longer pay to maintain the cemeteries and since that time the Blue Grass Memorial Cemetery (Cemetery A) has been abandoned. The cemetery has become overgrown with dense brush and trees and many of the gravestones have been vandalized.
