According to Greenwood County Cemetery Records, Volume One, p. vii this is the
"Mathews Mill Cemetery, Hwy #25 S to South Greenwood, bearing rt. At Kirksey Dr. Turn rt onto Bond Ave. Cemetery is in 500 block of Bond."
Mathews Mill Cemetery was originally called the Grendel Mill #2 Cemetery. This was determined from death certificates for those buried there with grave markers. Their death certificates were viewed online for the name of the cemetery in which they were buried. Grendel Mill #2 was opened in 1897 and the name change came in 1930 when Grendel Mill #2 was purchased by the James C. Self, who then changed the name to Mathews Mill in honor of Mrs. Lura Mathews Self. The Mathews textile mill was doubled in size in 1937 and remodeled into three plants in 1957. There were several textile mills in the city of Greenwood and each mill included not only the mill plant, but a village of brick homes, a school, churches and a general store. This Mathews Mill village also included a cemetery, which was located at one end of the village. After the mill plant closed, the village houses became homes for anyone buying them and the cemetery was left undisturbed. The cemetery is currently maintained by the Mathews Mill neighborhood association and is still occasionally used for new burials. All legible markers were photographed in May 2016 and an earlier cemetery survey, found in the local library, was also used to determine those buried there that no longer had a legible marker.
