The Hillcrest Cemetery was originally called the Greenwood Mill Cemetery. This was determined from death certificates for those buried there with grave markers. Their death certificates were viewed online for the name of the cemetery in which they were buried. It appears that the name change came circa 1920 as those buried earlier were listed in Greenwood Mill Cemetery and those buried later were listed in Hillcrest Cemetery. The Greenwood Mill textile plant was completed in 1889 and a second plant was built in 1912 and both were remodeled in 1955. There were several textile mills in the city of Greenwood and each mill included not only the mill plant, but a village of brick homes, a school, churches and a general store. This Greenwood Mill village also included a cemetery, which was a short distance from the actual village and was located up on a knoll. After the mill plant closed, a golf course and sub-division were built on most of the acreage. Today, the cemetery with the Hillcrest Cemetery sign is located within the Lodge Grounds sub-division and is maintained and is still occasionally used for new burials. All legible markers were photographed in May 2016 and an earlier cemetery survey, found in the local library, was also used to determine those buried there that no longer had a legible marker. There are within the cemetery visible burials without any markers and also the remains of broken stones that once were markers.
