Purmela, Coryell County, Texas, 76566 USA

This rural cemetery is located just south of the city of Purmela Texas. The sprawling grounds cover a fair distance from North to South. A rock fence separates it from the road. Notice the very ornate metal sign that is installed for this cemetery, it is unique and lovely. There are two gates for entrance into this cemetery and in the back left corner is a pavilion. The pavilion is furnished with a picnic table. Smith Cemetery was founded in 1878 and has old headstones located on the left side of the property. The graves are located throughout the grounds and many have curbing. There is a flag pole and many benches. One small crypt is located on the southern side and one grave is covered in cement and sea shells. Close to the crypt is a Texas Historical Marker for John Raney Bertrand. You will need to search a little since it is almost covered by a large shrub. In 1869 He married Mary Frances Cayce and they moved to Coryell County where they resided with their family. The cemetery has plenty of room for expansion and the grounds are maintained. Watch out for “ant beds”. In 2018 there are 380 burials in this cemetery.

From Hwy 84 and Purmela Texas turn south on FM 183 and proceed until you see the cemetery on the left side of the road.
