This property originally belonged to William & Amelia (Bass) Wales.
During the last half of the 1800's, a Weldon family was migrating to
Texas and had requested permission to set up their camp near the Wales
home as one of their young children was very ill. When the child died,
William gave his permission to bury the youngster nearby. This burial
was the first in the cemetery and is marked by a small concrete marker.
The Wales family then set aside this small plot of ground to be used as
a community cemetery.

When Union Grove Church was organized, the members decided to build their
church near the small cemetery. In later years the cemetery was sometimes
referred to as the Union Grove Cemetery.
