St. Patrick's Cemetery officially opened in 1874. It was once the parish cemetery of St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church. The Church was established in West Troy (now Watervliet) in 1840 and predominately served an Irish immigrant population. In 2012 the church was demolished due to physical deterioration.
The old section of the cemetery pre-dates the parish opening and has burials dating back to the early 1840s. There are over 1000 veterans buried in the cemetery. In the spring of 2018, volunteer groups worked with Albany Diocesan Cemeteries in mapping, researching, excavating, restoring and replacing veterans' gravestones from the ground where they lay broken and/or buried for decades. From 2017-2020 a group of volunteers worked on identifying and recording the gravestone inscriptions in the "old section" There is more information about the cemetery on the Troy Irish Genealogy Society website.
