Since many of the cemeteries in New York City had met their capacity, Kensico Cemetery was organized in 1889 to meet the need for a last resting place for the city's residents. Created initially from 250 acres of rolling farmland, the cemetery road frontage is about one mile long. Claiming to be the largest cemetery in the world, another 350 acres was added in 1905 to make a 600-acre cemetery. With winding lanes through the cemetery, it has a park-like appearance with hundreds of beautiful upright statues and monuments, ponds, shade trees, and benches for resting. There is a goal to keep the native wildlife present including a dozen birdhouses and flowering bushes for butterflies. A staff maintains the well-kept grounds. Eventually, a Community Mausoleum was built in 1924 to offer above-ground burials and more recently in the mausoleum, a Niche Room for cremation ashes. The Sharon Gardens was established in 1953 as a section dedicated to people of the Jewish faith. Angel's Rest was developed as a burial section for only infants. The cemetery has a special section for members of the Actor's Fund of American and the National Vaudeville Association. A tall monument was erected in 1941 in memory of these actors with flat markers for each grave site.
