Founded in 1738, almost midway between Acton Center and East Acton, Woodlawn Cemetery, is the second oldest and largest of the three municipally-owned and operated cemeteries in Acton. It is a well-preserved example of a New England burial ground that illustrates evolving concepts of funerary from the Colonial period through the present. It was established in the early eighteenth century when it became clear that the North Acton Cemetery was too small and too remote for general utility to the community.
The cemetery is comprised of approximately 87.75 acres, with the earliest death date of 1740. The cemetery is still used today and in 2009 had about 4500 burials.
This cemetery is referred to as GR1 Woodlawn Cemetery in the "Vital Records of Acton Massachusetts to the end of the year 1849."
The Massachusetts Historical Commission refers to this cemetery in MACRIS as ACT.802 Woodlawn Cemetery.
