By 1741 the Frederick Parish Church was built next to the courthouse, being of a crude wood construction, and was replaced by a stone church by 1766. In 1827 the church took the name of Christ Church and shortly thereafter plans were made to build a bigger, and better, church. On June 24, 1828 the cornerstone was laid for the present day church on Winchester Lot #6. During the Civil War, the city was under martial law much of the time and services were infrequently held. Unlike some of the cities other churches, the Christ Church suffered little more than smashed windows.
The church does not have a true cemetery, but instead has a courtyard with a single interment. That individual is Thomas Lord Fairfax who presided over the Northern Neck of Virginia. He was buried at the original Frederick Parish Church in December of 1781, but was moved to the current church's location in 1828. Today, his body rests within a tomb located in the center of the church courtyard.
