The cemetery is named for the Hornsby family, which has many members represented, from the pioneering members for whom the bend in Colorado River and the later community were named to baseball great Rogers Hornsby. The cemetery is also known as Hornsby Bend Cemetery, although it is not located in Hornsby Bend, because it also served as a burial ground for members of the Hornsby Bend community.
The cemetery is located between the City of Austin and the old Hornsby Bend community, a third of a mile down a private road off of FM 969, which runs along the old Webberville Road. Although the cemetery is located on dedicated land, the road leading to it and the the parking are are on separate private property, so appropriate respect is due to keeping gates closed and trash and pets in check. The cemetery is located just above the historic flood plains of the Colorado River that were also fertile farm lands. The Hornsby Bend agricultural community was just to the east and southeast north of a large bend of the river. The farmland has progressively given away to residential developments, sand and gravel quarries, and most famously, a Tesla gigafactory.
