Established in 1808 on a 5 acre plot of land atop a hill by Louis Lorimier upon the death of his wife Charlotte. Land donated to the city to be used as a public burial ground. It is thought that there are more than 6,500 burials, many unmarked. Approximately 1,446 gravestones mark burials, many having been vandalized and disappeared. Records show that as many as 1,200 soldiers from the Civil War are buried there, most in unmarked graves.
Originally outside the city limits but now with growth of the city, it is within the city limits.
