Dyche Hall Natural History Museum
Also known as University of Kansas Natural History Museum
Lawrence, Douglas County, Kansas, USA
Dyche Hall, which is now on the National Registeer of Historic Places, was named for an early college naturalist and explorer by the name of Lewis Lindsay Dyche. Dyche had enrolled in KU and had become an assistant professor in Zoology. Over the next couple of decades, he made 2 trips to the Arctic where he was able to collect specimens for the college.
In 1891, he was tasked with the job of preserving the corpse of Comanche, the only survivor of the Massacre at Big Horn. Comanche is housed at Dyche Hall.
He was also asked to provide specimens for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition which was held in Chicago, IL.
Dyche Hall has been expanded a few times in order to provide more space for specimens as well as room for offices, laboratories, and classrooms for students.
Today, all of the programs are under the name of Biodiversity Institute and Natural History and includes several buildings, of which Dyche Hall is one of them.
