Founded in 1832, the City Cemetery, sometimes referred to as the South Bend City Cemetery, is the oldest burial ground in the city of South Bend, Indiana. Situated at the junction of historic Colfax and Walnut streets, the main gate on Elm Street is the only entrance. Multiple expansions have allowed for more than 14,000 graves and have left the cemetery with a unique trapezoidal shape. Located just west of the downtown business district, the cemetery has a park-like feel with many mature trees and boasts occupants from a Vice President of the United States to a Medal of Honor recipient. In recent years an ongoing restoration project has helped to preserve the legacy of this cemetery.
