Jose Rizal Park is the centerpiece of the Philippine nation. The execution of Jose Rizal here triggered a dream for an independent country. After escaping 300 years of Colonial rule by Spain in the late 1800's, the Spaniards were replaced by the Americans followed by the Japanese during World War II. After liberation during the Pacific War, Independence was finally granted at wars end by the Americans in 1995. The first President was installed in this very park. The historic site is not only the burial place of the Filipino patriot but a recreational area for thousands as well as the location of many historic events such as welcoming ceremonies for foreign leaders such as that of Pope John Paul in 1995
