The church is a cave carved into the mountainside on Mount Starius with a depth of 13 m (42 ft.), a width of 9.5 m (31 ft.) and a height of 7 m (23 ft). Some believe this to have been used by the very first Christians and is one of Christianity's oldest churches. The stone façade of the church was built by Crusaders who identified the grotto during their rule of Antioch from 1098 to 1268.
Burials are located within the church and in the cemetery located outside near the courtyard.
