Canongate Churchyard

In 1687 King James VII (of Scotland, II of England) decreed that the inhabitants of the Canongate would no longer be allowed to worship at Holyrood Abbey. The Canongate Kirk opened in 1691 with the graveyard being extended in 1813. In 1856, the Canongate became part of the City of Edinburgh.

At the back of the graveyard is a monument to the soldiers who died at Edinburgh Castle.
