Arbour Hill Cemetery is located at the rear of the National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks, Dublin 7. It is adjacent to the Church of the Sacred Heart, which is the prison chapel for Arbour Hill prison. The cemetery is accessible by car and by Dublin Bus Routes 37, 38, and 39. Although there are no guided tours, local tour buses include it among their stops.
Arbour Hill is a military cemetery, and maintained by the Irish Department of Defence. Those interred are predominantly British military personnel including wives and children who died in the Dublin area in the 19th and early 20th century.
The cemetery is also the last resting place of 14 of the executed leaders of the insurrection of 1916 otherwise known as “The Easter Rising”. Among those buried there are Patrick Pearse, James Connolly and Major John Mc Bride. The leaders were executed in Kilmainham and then their bodies were transported to Arbour Hill, where they were buried.
Photography and Video in the cemetery are allowed but commercial photography requires permission. The cemetery is gated and closes at 4:00 p.m. daily.
