A 46-hectare (110-acre) cemetery located in the eastern part (Palmyra) of Fremantle, Western Australia was established in 1898, and over 40,000 burials have taken place at this cemetery. For its first sixty years the cemetery was dedicated to burials only; but in 1959 a crematorium was opened here which allowed an alternative method of disposition. Over 66,000 cremations have taken place here since that date.
The cemetery contains the war graves of 120 Commonwealth service personnel of World War I and an additional 21 War dead from World War II. The city had a major naval base during this time period. In 2005 the addition of the Fremantle Mausoleum allowed a new unique memorial option for those wishing to commemorate a loved one within a mausoleum environment.
