The Südfriedhof (South Cemetery), patterned in line with the ideals of Baroque gardening, whose design was drawn up by the Garden Project Inspector, Heinrich Zeininger, was created between 1908 and 1909 as a second municipal cemetery to supplement the Nordfriedhof.

The central structure of the symmetrically arranged buildings is the crematorium which in 1912 was one of Prussia's first crematoriums to be commissioned. On a surface area of 330,700 square metres, the Südfriedhof has many historical burial sites, of which a few of the most prestigious are situated along the edge of the cemetery bordering the peripheral Ringweg road.
