This rural cemetery is located North-East of Clifton Texas on private property. When approaching the cemetery take time to admire the unusual metal artwork on the two gates. Someone took a lot of time and had a deep love of this cemetery to produce this type iron work. The small walk-thru gate is unlocked. The cemetery has a Historical Marker, a flagpole, and is clean. The older taller headstones are located on the left side of the property, but graves are scattered throughout the grounds. Six plots are enclosed with antique metal fencing. At one time 4x4 markers were installed with signs to designate the rows or sections but they are now rusted over and illegible. We observed 6 deer scampering across the fence on two sides of the cemetery. Trees are located on the grounds and provide a much needed shade during the hot Texas summer. As of 2018 there are 407 burials with room for expansion.

This cemetery, located on five acres out of the l. M. Armstrong survey, was already in use as a burial ground when the earliest original marked graves were dug in the early 1860s. The original owner of the land was Captain Allen S. Anderson, a frontier scout who was interred here in 1864. At that time the site was known as Clifton Graveyard. In 1877 Captain Anderson’s daughter, Flora Kemp, deeded the land for use as a graveyard..

In 1885 M. J. Oswald purchased the land and it was renamed the Oswald Cemetery. Burial in the cemetery has been free to people of all races. Among the pioneers interred here are early settlers of old town Clifton and several Civil War veterans. The Oswald family continues to own the land surrounding the cemetery at the dawn of the 21st century.
