What was to become Ute Cemetery received its first interment in 1880 when prospector "Colonel" Kirby arrived in the area and died soon after. Even though two other cemeteries opened in Aspen, Ute Cemetery continued to be used by working people and the poor. An estimated 200 graves are identified at the site, half of which are unmarked. When the town slid into its bust phase, the Cemetery fell into disrepair. The City of Aspen partnered with the Colorado Historical Society to restore the site and repair the stonework. The work was completed in 2003. The cemetery has been put on the National Register of Historic Places.
