People's Cemetery was established on June 14, 1918 for African-American residents of Martinsville and Henry County.
Approximately 430 people are buried in the cemetery, including 75 people with military service records who served in conflicts ranging from World War I to Vietnam.
Some surveys show that People's Cemetery was owned in part by the Baldwin Real Estate Investment Corporation around 1946. As of Sept. 1, 2001, the cemetery was placed under the trusteeship of the Peoples Cemetery Incorporated, a 501 (c)3 corporation, by the Circuit Court of Martinsville.
