This cemetery has many questions surrounding the actual whereabouts of those buried here.

Old Hickory was the town's first cemetery but quickly became too small with no room for expansion. It is said that those buried here were exhumed and relocated to Oakwood Cemetery. Although there are still headstones in this cemetery, it is not known if those named remain. The only individuals that were to have remained here are a few Catawba Indians in unmarked graves.

The cabin that is located in the park was donated by Henry Cline and relocated to its present spot in 1952. It was built around 1820 and was part of an expansion of the original cabin built by Joe Wilson. In 1962, it was restored by the Garden Council and was used as a museum and tea room. In 1969, artifacts were stolen which halted the restoration of period articles. Eventually it closed its doors for good. Today the cabin is dilapidated and in disrepair.

In 1936, it was documented that 19 headstone remained visible in the cemetery. Although in 1951 a roster was put together that contained 31 names of those buried here. However, 20 additional names were given by the late J. Lee Latta. But I documented much fewer than that, with some pieces of headstones that remain that have nothing written on them.

There is much documentation that the topic of exhumation was discussed but no proof that it was ever completed. However, in Oakwood Cemetery there is a street sign that bears the name Robinson Ave. where there is a large vacant area that has not one headstone. Could this be where the Old Robinson graves were relocated?

Information taken from articles published in the Hickory Daily Record in the years 1936, 1951, 1952, 1961, 1962, 1963, and 1969.
