The cemetery known today as Hillcrest Cemetery includes a large expanse of open area bound by Adams, Stafford, and Carr streets.
This cemetery is known by various names including: Methodist Cemetery, North Monroe Colored Cemetery, New Town Cemetery, Monroe Black Cemetery, People's Cemetery, Monroe City Cemetery or just "Monroe".
It is not exactly clear when Hillcrest City Cemetery - the one located across from the original burial grounds was begun, but the general time frame would be about 1945 -1946 judging from Dr. John Massey's Obituary found on page 1 of the May 16, 1946 Monroe Enquirer which notes..."burial was in New Colored Cemetery".
From “Community Facilities Summary Public Improvement Program and Capital Budget” (1966 for Union County, NC), p.19: “The City of Monroe owns and administers two cemeteries…Hillcrest Cemetery contains about 20 acres and 40 per cent of the plots have been sold. It was established in 1945 for non-whites…”
