This cemetery is located just north of Pottstown PA, near Boyertown. From 1882 to 1890, there was a migration of Jews from Russia and Hungary, and a number of families settled in Pottstown. The small Jewish community felt the need for a Synagogue and in May 1892 a Charter was granted to a new congregation named Hessed Shel Emes (Mercy and Truth). The congregation acquired its first Synagogue building in 1893 on Hale Street. The plaque above is the original cornerstone from that building. It is located face-up, mostly covered with debris, just in front of the first tree on the right side of the fence. This cemetery was purchased before the synagogue was built by a handful of Jewish families who met in one another's homes. You will notice the narrowness of this small cemetery. The reason for this is that his particular Jewish sect of people were not allowed to enter a cemetery, Jewish law forbid it. To circumvent this requirement, the stones were placed close to the fence so relatives could visit and never enter the actual cemetery. When a new synagogue was built, it was decided this plaque should be placed here.
