Iowa Colony Cemetery
Iowa Colony, Brazoria County, Texas, USA
Technically within the Iowa Colony city limits, this area of Brazoria County uses the postal code and mailing address of the nearby city of Rosharon.
From Meridiana Elementary School, travel approximately .6 mile north on Iowa Colony Blvd (or 46), over a one-lane bridge over a canal. The cemetery is not visible from the road, but at the very back part of a rural residential lot, which has a mailbox at the road and a private driveway that serves the two residences located on the property. As of 17 August 2018 the owners and their adult son reside in the two houses on the property. This description is based on a visit at that date, with permission and accompanied by the adult son, and includes information provided verbally by him at that visit.
Only four markers are still visible, three flat and with the surname Buice, plus one upright marker, for J. W. Shaw. The three flat markers are sunken and barely visible beneath the grass.
The current property owners purchased the property about 10 years ago, not knowing a cemetery was there, and the son discovered its existence when trying to clear out growth to fashion a baseball field. Approximately 12 markers were discovered at that point in time. Two had the same last name and date of death, with one being born the same day as well, so presumably a mother and her baby dying together in childbirth. The exact number of burials in the cemetery is unknown.
Visitors from Yugoslavia (or possibly some other Eastern European country) have recently travelled to the cemetery to search for the graves of their family members.
A church may have been located next to the cemetery at one time.
