1/2 miles S of Bangs, on the S side of Johnstown Road (County Road 19)
The name is as listed in the 1991 Knox County Genealogy Society's publication of cemeteries and interments.
In the same book, graves are listed by Row number so are noted here with "Row" or "R" and the number of that row.
There is an enclosed area in the approximate space described. Liberty Township trustees confirmed that the County Home Cemetery is this location, as verified by a state survey. The Township is no longer responsible for the property or burial records. As of May 1, 2010, the cemetery has no markers visible from outside the fence. As of 1999, small metal plates with hand-engraved information had been placed flat on the ground where the original stones had been. The markers are approximately 4x8 inches, secured to the plots, and can be seen though there is some build-up of soil and thatch around them. The inscriptions are legible. There are no graves marked in the vicinity of the gate.
The 1991 book lists graves with names on markers, then it notes there were 109 graves with no first or last name on the markers. The book states records were maintained by the Township at the time of publication.
The County Home was a large building visible from the described location. It has also been used as the County Hospital, also called the County Infirmary, and Mount Vernon [Baptist] Bible College as late as 1978. In recent years, it has been used at Halloween as a "Haunted House" attraction. Persons buried in this cemetery were most likely without resources, and little information is attached to their graves. Where possible, information from public records is attached to their memorials. The building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was destroyed by fire in 2015.
Biographies with a certificate number attached to the information: that is the Ohio death certificate number on file with the Ohio Historical Society. Copies of these records are available from them for a small fee.
The cemetery is located in Liberty Township, Knox County, Ohio, and is # 6218 (County Home Cemetery / County Cemetery) in “Ohio Cemeteries 1803-2003”, compiled by the Ohio Genealogical Society.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) feature ID for the cemetery is 1069202 (County Cemetery / County Home Cemetery).
