Hamby Cemetery is located in the Hamby Community about five miles northeast of Abilene just off of Texas State Highway 351. The cemetery is located right on the border with Jones and Shackelford Counties. The community of Hamby began at the turn of the last century as Corners, so named because the community was located at the junction of four counties. The community opened its post office in 1902 and was named Hamby after the name of Corners was rejected by the postal service. Hamby was the first name of the community's earliest merchant and first postmaster, Hamby Richardson. The community soon began to grow. The earliest known permanent marker in the cemetery belongs to that of Rudolph P. Byram, who was buried there in 1909. However, since Hamby began years before, there are probably long gone markers that would have dated back earlier.
