The official name of this cemetery is "The Shedd Cemetery" but it is perhaps more commonly called the "Pugh" Cemetery after the name of the man on whose Donation Land Claim it was started and members of whose family were among the earliest burials here.



This cemetery is situated on Section 13, Township 13 South of Range 4 West in Linn County, and in the North-West quarter of the section. This is the donation land claim taken up in 1851 by Francis Asbury Pugh. The cemetery is located about three-fourths of a mile south of the town Shedd and about an equal distance west of Highway U. S. 99E. The land is at present [in1940] a part of the Jensen estate....



The land for this burying ground was given for cemetery purposes by Mrs. Ruth Jessup Pugh, wife of Francis Asbury Pugh. The Pugh family, consisting of Frances Asbury Pugh, his wife and baby son, John Wesley Pugh, his brother Washington Pugh, and the widowed mother of Francis and Washington, Mary Donovan Pugh, came from Salem, Iowa in 1846, first settling in Yamhill County about fifteen miles south of Portland. In 1851 Francis Asbury Pugh, his wife Ruth, and their family removed to Linn County and took up the claim where the cemetery is located.



The first burial of record in this tract is that of George W. Pugh, on Aug. 26, 1853, at the age of 1 year, 6 months and 7 days. The second was Mary E. Pugh who died January 18, 1854 at the age of 6 years, 5 months and 3 days. These were both children of Francis Asbury and Ruth Jessup Pugh, the owner of the original claim. The third burial is that of Wm. B. Anderson who died June 18, 1857 at the age of 25 yrs. 4 mos, 3 ds.



The oldest birth age recorded here is that of Mary Pugh who was born October 2, 1789 and died Jan 23, 1872 at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 21 days. This Mary Pugh was the mother of Francis Asbury Pugh and Washington Pugh, previously mentioned, and came to Oregon in their company in 1846.
