First used in 1851 by HOUSTON family. Donated 16 Apr 1883 by Lucy A (Daugherty) McConnell to the Immanuel Church of the Evangelical Assn of North America. It was platted in May 1887 and deeded 2 April 1890 by the church to the East Albany Cemetery Association, which managed the cemetery until about 1959. In 1960, the land became City of Albany property, although the listed owner is still “East Albany Cemetery”. It is located just across Salem Avenue (formerly highway 99E) from the Waverly cemeteries (Jewish and St John’s/Waverly Memorial), and adjacent to Waverly Lake. Some graves are unmarked, and some were likely disturbed during the excavation of the gravel pit and filling of Waverly Lake in the 1930’s. Further disturbance may have resulted from the realignment of Salem Avenue in the 1970’s (NW corner).
Houston / East Albany Cemetery is one of four pioneer cemeteries in Albany (Masonic 1853, Riverside 1847, Waverly 1877). It is officially located on the Anderson Cox Donation Land Claim, but no Coxes are known to be buried there. There is no building, office or sign on the cemetery. A strip 30 feet wide on the southern edge is unplatted, and is a hillside sloping down to Waverly Park. The only parking access is in Waverly Park or the two nearby cemeteries. Total area is 1 acre.
The earliest known burials are [1] Mary (Brown) Houston, who married 25 Dec 1827 in Miami County, Ohio to Robert J Houston Sr, and [2] their six-year-old son, Robert Jr. Mother and son died in October 1851 in Linn County, Oregon. The Houston family emigrated from Ohio to Oregon in 1848, and settled a Donation Land Claim just east of the cemetery.
