Gerfers Cemetery

Bexar County, Texas, USA
Memorials 21 added (95% photographed)

The Gerfers Cemetery was established circa 1873, with the first known internment of Johann Theodor Gerfers.

It is a small family cemetery in far northern Bexar County, TX, located at the end of a cul-de-sac on Galliard Drive in today’s Timberwood Park Subdivision. It is listed in "Cemeteries of Bexar County, Vol. 5" published by the San Antonio Genealogical Society.

It is not known the exact number of interments within the cemetery, but the number is believed to be in the low to mid twenties. Uncertainty regarding the number of burials is due to apparent gravesites without headstones.

Most interments were born in Prussia/Germany, or the children of immigrants who moved to Texas in the mid-1800s for a better life. Most entered the country via ports in Indianola or Galveston with a few entering in the northeast United States.

Headstones include several family names: Gerfers, Mecke, Poss, Leistikow, Bacon, and Coblentz, but they all had strong ties to the Gerfers family through marriage.

When the ranch property that included the cemetery was sold, the Gerfers family included a line on the land sale document that stated the transaction did not include the cemetery.

The metal fence around the cemetery was added by Timberwood Park developer G.G. Gale who was concerned that the advancement of homes in the area may result in the cemetery being desecrated.

The Gerfers Cemetery was designated as a Historic Texas Cemetery in 2017.
