Cherry Log Baptist Church has a newer cemetery behind the church. The old cemetery is across the highway and not visible from the church...
The Old Cherry Log Cemetery, also known as The Upper Cherry Log Cemetery, and Cherry Log Baptist Church Old Cemetery, is located across SR 515 from the church.
From the Laurel Ridge Drive intersection, cross over to the southbound lanes and travel 0.15 miles. Turn right onto the first driveway apron that is not marked with a driveway name.
A very short distance up the driveway is the Old Cemetery...
Elijah Holt owned the property in 1848, and the first burial there was his father, Larkin Holt in 1855. Elijah was the second to be buried there in 1860.
Many of the graves are located by slate or field stones and are not engraved with the names of those who occupy the graves...
Most all the surnames in the cemetery can be traced to families and neighbors from the area when the cemetery and church group was established...
Cherry Log Church was believed to have first been a Brush Arbor Church that started in 1854. Folklore says to get to that meeting spot, you had to go down a path and cross the creek on a cherry log. Thence the name of the church...
A frame building was built in 1902, and the current brick church was built in 1967. The cemetery behind the church was first put to use in late 1977.
