Powell Chapel UMC Church was established in 1850 when Reverend William Francis Spaight Powell,
a Methodist Minister, helped establish a little log church in a beautiful grove beside the road which is currently
known as Flat Rock Road.
The oldest grave (that can be read on a gravestone) dates back to October 17, 1858. The Powell Chapel Cemetery
was at one time the community cemetery for Flat Rock community. Flat Rock Baptist used this cemetery also, until April 1959
when Flat Rock Baptist established and starting using their own separate cemetery. (see Glenn Memorial on Flat Rock Road).
In 2015, Powell Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery has over 630 burials and continues with burials today.
