Also known today as Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery. Mt. Zion Cemetery is located in an area of former cotton fields and farmland (“Post Oak”) along the north side of Post Oak Tritt Road just east of Johnson Ferry Road in unincorporated East Cobb County, Georgia. Today it is a quiet spot shaded by tall pines and nestled among suburban housing subdivisions and office parks. According to the church’s “Centennial History” (see below), there are “over 100 grave sites known and marked, with the earliest dating from 1886, which actually predates the founding of Mt. Zion. It is not known if this is an original burial site or a reinterment after the establishment of the cemetery.” There are also a number of unmarked graves representing unknown burials. The cemetery is affiliated with and maintained by Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, today located about two miles south at 1770 Johnson Ferry Road, Marietta, Georgia.
The church's first building was erected next to the oldest portion of the cemetery in 1892, all on an acre of land donated by Mrs. L. J. (Bud) Groover (daughter-in-law of J. Chapel Groover) to the trustees of Mt. Zion Church of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. When that first church building became dilapidated in the early 1900’s, the old structure was torn down and a former schoolhouse building was hauled into service (using a mule and log rollers) on land across the Post Oak Road donated by J. S. (Jim) Pitts. The church facility as and where it stands today was begun on five acres of property donated by Mr. and Mrs. A. A. McPherson in 1964, with the sanctuary completed in 1966. Subsequent renovations and expansions of the present church buildings occurred in 1968, 1976, 1985, 1997, and 2008.
