Long Cane Baptist Church Cemetery is located about 100 feet northeast of Long Cane Baptist Church, established in 1829. In 1962, West Point Dam was authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1962. The lake formed from this dam is West Point Lake which controls flooding of the Chattahoochee River. The U. S. Army Corp of Engineers found cemeteries that were going to be flooded by the rising waters forming the lake.
Three of those Cemeteries Were:
Potts with 46 Interments
Sheppard with 63 Interments
Wilkinson with 12 Interments
These interments were re-interned at Long Cane Baptist Church Cemetery. All engraved markers were moved along with their remains. There were several graves marked only with stone markers with no engraving, thus these remains were moved with no identifying markers.
