Evergreen was once a little town which predated Giddings. When the railroad came through Giddings, slowly everyone moved there, abandoning Evergreen.
The cemetery, approximately one fenced acre in size, abandoned but visible to the left at end of private lane, is on the farm of Ernest Schiwert near Elm Creek on FM1624. The oldest marker is for Nancy McKeown and her death is shown as October, 1857. There are believed to be earlier burials in this cemetery but these early graves do not have markers. There are many rocks, bricks and depressions in the cemetery, indicating many graves that have been lost. Currently FindAGrave records 33 graves.
Some of the history for Evergreen records that a band of outlaws or horse thieves, sentenced by Judge Lynch (date unknown), were hanged on the old oak tree, placed in a wagon and hauled to the cemetery ¼ mile away. All buried in a row with a large rock placed at the head of each grave. The two Dozier boys were hanged at Evergreen and probably buried there. Other notables are the two Stockton men who shot each other at Evergreen in October 1868 and are probably buried in this cemetery. Wilson Anderson, shot by Bill Longley, March 31, 1875, lived in Evergreen (1870 census) and is thought by descendants to be buried in Evergreen Cemetery. Two Irvin brothers, who were hanged on the old tree in 1876, and Shaw, who was shot, after the three were sentenced for stealing horses are buried in Evergreen.
Michael Mutchink (1831-1895) and son Charles (1860-1890), were buried not in this cemetery but on adjacent private property, immediately north and west, near the no longer standing old Evergreen non-denominational church. Their combined headstone and iron fence enclosure is well maintained.
