Cimetière Le Palais - Belle Île
Also known as Le Palais Belle Ile Cemetery , Cimetière Le Palais - Belle Île à Pontorgo
Le Palais, Departement du Morbihan, Bretagne, France
Le Palais is one of four parishes on the island of Belle-île-en-Mer. In 1766, seventy-eight Acadian families found refuge on the island, all entering through the port of Palais. They arrived mostly from Morlaix and Saint-Malo, after being exiled and treated as prisoners of war during Le Grand Derangement.
Belle-île-en-Mer was one of the few locations that openly accepted the Acadians, who were known to be industrious, by giving them their own parcels of land to develop. The Acadians that went to Belle-île-en-Mer are well documented through the "Declarations of Belle-île-en-Mer". Some of the Acadians migrated on to Louisiana and some of the Acadians integrated with the local population. Many residents today can trace their roots through the Acadians.
Please note that burial plots in the cemeteries are only rented and not "owned". Therefore, when the rent on a burial plot is unpaid, the grave is recycled. Burials may take place over prior burials or may be moved to a mass grave within the same cemetery.
