The first settlers came to the southwest part of clay township in 1849 and 1850. When Samuel McGinnis died on July 2, 1854 there was no cemetery nearby. So He was buried on state property adjacent to his land. This site would eventually become Bush Cemetery. In 1867 Jeremiah Porter Bush and his wife Isabel Purchased the land from the state.
In 1969 there were 7 people buried in the cemetery and on July second of the same year (on the fifteenth anniversary of Mr McGinnis's death). Jeremiah and Isabel bush deeded the cemetery to cemetery trustees for the price of twenty five dollars. Since there was no name for the cemetery at that time the name Bush was chosen. The deed entailed that if Maintenance should ever end the land would revert back to the original owners. Later that same year a fence (and possibly a sign) were erected.
The last burial at Bush was in 1933 after the death of Sylvia Slemp Davis Who died in childbirth. Maintenance stopped sometime in the late 30s or 40s, and the land was deeded back to John Oswald ( the owner of the surrounding land at that time). After Maintenance ended the cemetery plunged into a state of neglect.
About 1958 Richard Slemp took it upon himself to take care of the cemetery. He cleared Brush and planted grass. As well as soliciting funds from local residents who had relatives buried there to have a new fence erected around the cemetery to replace the very damaged one from 1869. Mr. Slemp also painted a sign to be placed above the gate of the cemetery. Which still hangs today.
Mr. Slemp died in 1964, and his wife Leona continued to keep up the cemetery until 1969 .After that the farmer of the land occasionally burnt off the cemetery. But that hasn't happened for many years. There was also a new sign erected in the late 90s by Maxine Davis Daughter of Sylvia May Slemp Davis.
